SuiPlay0X1 Set to Challenge Steam Deck with Crypto Features
This summer, the SuiPlay0X1 is poised to enter the market as a direct competitor to the Steam Deck, integrating cryptocurrency elements into its gaming experience. During our hands-on session at Token2049 in Dubai, we explored the device’s standout features and performance. Notably, it ran Elden Ring smoothly without any compromise on graphical quality, showcasing a sharp display that enhances the overall gaming experience. The SuiPlay0X1 is not just a handheld console; it aims to cater to both conventional PC gaming and blockchain-based experiences.
First Impressions of the SuiPlay0X1
At the Token2049 event, we had the opportunity for a brief interaction with this portable gaming console, which is gearing up for its launch. As a dedicated gaming device, its build quality appears robust, boasting impressive specifications along with a high-resolution screen. However, its unique selling point lies in its cryptocurrency functionality.
Display Quality and Gaming Performance
Upon handling the SuiPlay0X1, the outstanding display quality instantly captures attention. Although OLED screens are often favored in handheld devices, the 7-inch LCD display offers vivid color reproduction and a bezeless touchscreen that enhances the visual experience. During our gameplay session with Elden Ring, the device maintained a steady 30 frames per second, delivering a fluid performance that did not compromise the graphics. The screen’s capability to handle the game at high settings resulted in vibrant colors and deep blacks, with minimal backlight bleed.
Powerful Specifications Behind the Performance
The SuiPlay0X1 is equipped with a powerful AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor, an AMD Ryzen 780M graphics card, and 512GB of SSD storage, which contribute to its impressive performance. Priced at $599, it’s marketed as a premium handheld gaming console, although pre-orders have already sold out. Some users might find the LCD display less appealing compared to the OLED option available on the Steam Deck, which is priced lower. However, Adeniyi Abiodun, co-founder and CPO of Mysten Labs, emphasized that this LCD screen is among the best available.
Ergonomics and Control Features
While the SuiPlay0X1 boasts numerous features, its ergonomics may not match competitors. Its relatively flat back could potentially lead to discomfort during extended gaming sessions. This aspect becomes particularly noticeable when compared to the Steam Deck, which offers a more natural grip. Further testing will be necessary to assess long-term comfort with the device.
Control Layout and User Experience
The control setup on the SuiPlay0X1 includes standard features expected from a gaming console, such as dual joysticks, a d-pad, four triggers, and four buttons reminiscent of PlayStation controllers. Overall, the controls feel high-quality, particularly the joysticks, which offer a comfortable grip.
Playtron Operating System: An Open Gaming Ecosystem
A key highlight of the SuiPlay0X1 is its Linux-based Playtron operating system. Abiodun stated that this OS can be installed on multiple devices, including computers and phones. He believes that the gaming industry needs an alternative to the current closed systems, advocating for a more open ecosystem. Mysten Labs envisions the SuiPlay0X1 as a prime example of what can be achieved with the Playtron OS, encouraging other developers to adopt it for their devices to foster competition.
Game Compatibility and Unique Offerings
PlaytronOS is designed to facilitate gaming from platforms like Steam, Epic Games, and GOG, alongside games that utilize the Sui network. Abiodun highlighted this as a significant advantage, particularly since the Steam Deck has restrictions on playing non-Steam titles and bans cryptocurrency games. Upon its launch, the SuiPlay0X1 will support seven crypto games, including Xociety, Warped Universe, Panzerdogs, and ONE Fight Arena, all of which are titles from the Sui network.
Seamless Crypto Integration
The SuiPlay0X1 Wallet, built on the Sui blockchain, is designed to facilitate crypto interactions without overwhelming the user. Players only need a regular Web2 login to access crypto-centric games seamlessly. Mysten Labs has stated that while connectivity issues prevented us from testing these features live, users will be able to engage with crypto games effortlessly once logged in. The wallet supports the SUI token and the newly introduced Game Dollar stablecoin, along with titles from other networks if they are available on supported platforms.
Potential for a Unique Market Position
The SuiPlay0X1’s emphasis on crypto gaming sets it apart from other handheld consoles that focus solely on traditional gaming. While there are devices capable of playing titles from Steam and Epic Games, none have successfully integrated cryptocurrency functionalities with the performance needed for serious gaming. Other crypto games, like Off the Grid on the Epic Games Store, will be compatible, but titles such as Axie Infinity, which is not available on Epic, will not be playable at launch.
Looking Ahead: Will Mainstream Gamers Embrace It?
The SuiPlay0X1 may find its niche in the gaming market if it delivers on its promises of seamless crypto integration and cross-chain compatibility. However, the question remains whether mainstream gamers will take notice, especially in light of the current slowdown in the broader crypto gaming sector. The answer will become clearer as the device makes its debut this summer.
